I wake up quite early yet feel well rested. I surmise
that sleeping outside provides me with more oxygen. It is
rather too chilly for me this morning. I try to go back to
sleep, but it's too cold for that. Still camping is great so long
as it isn't year around.
Incidentally plants in the desert don't get much rain. Because of
this they can't regenerate as fast as plants do in a wet climate.
They deal with this by growing thorns. Most of the plants
around here have them. I have stickers in my sleeping bag,
my air mattress, and my clothes. There is one in my back
that no matter how hard I try, won't seem to get dislodged.
There! It's out.
Now I am waiting in front of Ready Labor temp agency so that I can
get picked up to go to the Holoman AFB to work for my mistake. I'm
early as not to be late. We hope in the car and away we go.
When we get to Holoman AFB, we are required to wait at the Welcome
Center for 45 minutes, for our escort to show up. It is illegal to
travel without an escort, and without a pass which we wait in line to
receive after showing our I.D. cards.
After this we drive around
at random while following our escort until we arrive at the Outdoor
Recreation building. Our escort states that he doesn't smoke but now
needs one. He is provided with a cigarette. He doesn't know what do
do, and the situation is SNAFU.
Eventually, we get somebody else to
follow, and then arrive at our destination, a very large landing strip
where the event is to take place.
The show is being set up. Much of the display items are in place, yet
the area is mostly deserted
The task is simple in theory, but complex in execution. We must assemble
a very large tent and then move some heavy items into the tent, including
a humvee vehicle with it's engine removed, and some rifles which have been
modified to not shoot bullets, but to still seem real enough to fool you into
thinking that they do. This is for a battle simulation which is supposed to
be very realistic, with flashing lights and sounds. Assembling the tent
consists of moving and erecting some very long and heavy aluminum beams
fixing those beams to some large drums weighed down by filling them with water,
and attaching some very large canvas walls to the frame. It takes several men
under supervision, to put all of the pieces together properly.
One thing this area of the country has is beautiful
sunsets. After we are done working we can enjoy the sunset
for a moment. Then we go back to the temp agency to get paychecks
which we can cash at WalMart.
