The ANSARI X PRIZE is a cash award to be given out to the first non-governmental team which builds a vehicle capable of launching three people to a height of 62 miles , and doing so twice within a two week period in the same vehicle. The award amount is $10 million dollars.
There are over 20 teams competing in this effort.
The idea for the X Prize was drawn from aviation prizes of the early 20th century, specifically the Orteig prize which was won by Charles Lindbergh for crossing the Atlantic nonstop.
It is hoped that the technology developed as a result of the X Prize will find its way into common usage for such services as space tourism, package delivery, and satellite launching.
Scaled Composites. My favorite and many others. They are far ahead of all of the other contestants and are now considered to be most likely to win. Burt Rutan has a nack for creating very unique and very capable flying craft. He has the Voyager aircraft to his name, which flew nonstop without refueling. His backer is none other than Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.
The da Vinci Project is one of two Canadian X Prize contestants. The identifying points of this hardware are
A. Ballon Assisted Launch
B. Ballute Reentry System
Starchaser Industries, like the others, are focused on providing safe, reliable, affordable, and reusable access to outer space. They are creating the Thunderstar three person capsule and the Starchaser 5 reusable launch vehicle to propel the capsule loftward. They are using liquid oxygen and kerosene as propellants.
Armadillo Aerospace was founed by famous videogame programmer John Carmack, Father of Quake and Doom. His team is working on hydrogen peroxide computer controlled hoppers. The ultimate goal is to evolve the hoppers into fully reusable X Prize class vehicles and beyond.
ARCA, the Aeronautics and Cosmonautics Romanian Association is developing a hydrogen peroxide monopropellant fueled suborbital rocketship as their X Prize vehicle.

Yes, and please feed the aliens!
This year we had not-so-good mock Mars rovers. They were store bought. Control was by cord and there were only two control options, forward and reverse. No turning capability is provided.
But that did not dissuade the children from lining up and squirming for the change to play space explorer by driving around the toy rovers.
