Ok, I arrive at the labor temp agency at 7:00 in the morning.
A guy in a machine shop next door gave me a few bucks to go get
some coffee as the night before was bitter cold and I was still
feeling the effects of that chill. Pacing helped to both keep me
awake and to stay warm.
I do meet the lady who runs the temp agency not too long after
the stated time. I had my application filled out the day before
so as to not seem like a gimp. Getting set up was swift. Ironically
enough the only work available is helping to set up the X-Prize Cup on Friday
and to tear down the
X-Prize Cup on Monday. I wanted to volunteer, but the only thing that
came to mind was to go call and harangue StarChaser for a little spot, but they
must have been too excited and busy doing rockety things. Talk about a weird coincidence!
Later that day, I finally find a decent campsite. After finding this camp site
I decide to take a nap. It was soooo nice and warm and cozy in the sun. OUCH!
I get a sunburn after a few hours of this. Another lesson learned, nothing in the
desert rests in the sun besides, stones, plants, and dead animals. I need to
have a tendency to keep some shade or a building over me.
I try to use the computer at the library, but am too sleepy to do so.
One thing that I noticed is that not a lot of people in this town actually know about the X-Prize
Cup. I talk to several people about it and they don't know what it is.
Maybe the X-Prize Foundation has yet to unleash their full advertising. Maybe the town of
Alomogorodo was glossed over. Odd, as it's only 10 miles away.
I do notice that in the library there is a newspaper advertisement for the event.
What I now see is that the X-Prize Cup has been combined with a yearly air show
which is always held at the Holoman Air Force Base. I wonder why they did this
instead of just having the event at the Las Cruces Airport like the last two years.
At WalMart I talk to a cute lady with very odd hair. Her hair was like a cross between
Sonic the Hedgehog hair and dreadlocks. It was kinda cool though. This in the smokers
section outside of the building.
